Visikon is pleased to be a partner in the SmartClinic project, which in June 2023 was awarded DKK 9.7 million by the Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak fund under the „Innovation and Entrepreneurship“ program, as part of the objective: Strengthening innovation capacity with a focus on smart specialization.
The project’s aim is to develop a generic model for digitized treatment pathways for patients with chronic diseases. In the SmartClinic project, chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is used as a case study to develop and test a model for digital treatment pathways, which in the long term can be applied to other medical specialties dealing with chronic conditions.
The project is developing and testing a model for an outpatient SmartClinic consisting of two treatment pathways: a Clinic Online and a Clinic on Demand.
Clinic Online is a treatment pathway for patients with stable disease who do not require in-person follow-up visits at the hospital clinic. These patients use an app for IBD patient education and complete online questionnaires on an annual basis. Additionally, Clinic Online patients undergo blood tests and submit stool samples either semi-annually or once a year.
Clinic on Demand is a treatment pathway that physically attends to all acutely ill patients. The project tests healthcare technologies that can initiate treatment faster than current practice. For example, the project introduces ultrasound scanners into the clinic for the first time. This patient group also uses an app for IBD education.
The project takes an interdisciplinary approach, working with user-driven innovation in the development of digital health technologies for patient education.
The four project partners in Denmark and Sweden are: Zealand University Hospital, Visikon, Skåne University Hospital, and the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. Together, the partners will develop the generic model for digitized treatment pathways for patients with chronic illness.
The generic model combines self-monitoring with advanced digital technology and online follow-up, alongside more efficient acute treatment in the clinic, where healthcare technologies are applied in new ways. The solution is co-developed with patients in a user-involving setup.
