Radiation therapy is one of the most common cancer treatments, but how does it work?
One of the problems with cancer cells, is that they grow and divide faster than normal ones.
The goal of treatment therefore becomes slowing down the pace of growth – or even better, make the cells shrink and die.
Radiation therapy primarily works because cancer cells are more sensitive than other benign cells.
The high-energy waves target the DNA inside the cells, causing them to break down, unable to grow or further divide.
Depending on the specific case, other areas of the body can be exposed to radiation in some shape or form as well.
Luckily, benign cells are less sensitive and better at recovering.
